Psychics

Personally - I have seen no evidence that psychics, satanic or otherwise, have ever shown actual results except as fiction on television. My doubt is echoed in this text from Daniel...

Dan 2:27-28
Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.

According to the Bible - there is only one supernatural force at work which is beneficial to humanity. However, if I were a police officer and a self proclaimed psychic offered me a tip - I suppose I would take it - but would assume that the information had more explainable origins -like maybe the psychic was in on the caper! Also - we must remember that certain statistical and observational sciences can elicit information that seemingly looks "psychic" but in reality come from techniques anyone can learn in an average college course. These techniques are used by famous magicians all the time and usually result from paying attention to details that most folks don't pay attention to.

Now, with that said, it is certainly possible that God might, for reasons unknown, intervene in a crisis in some supernatural way. However,in my experience, when God does this, He does so with little fanfare and in a way that does not give credit to any one individual.

Pre-Marital Sex

It is true the Bible does not specifically mention "Premarital sex". What Scripture explicitly commands is that we are to have sex with just one person. As we are told in many texts such as Genesis 2 ....

Gen 2:24
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Human sexuality is a gift from God in which two people are able to unite physically, emotionally and Spiritually in a way like no other. While modern mass media emphasizes the physical aspect of sex - that is only one small part of the experience.

Because there is such a deep connection of heart and soul in this act, God designed the human body and heart for sex with just one person. Just because someone stops having sex with another person doesn't mean the intense emotional connection will ever go away. This can affect later relationships as they may not seem "whole" due to a remaining connection with another.

God's design also makes sense in light of all the dangers associated with multiple sex partners - Aids, STD's, Unwanted children etc... God does not condone pre-marital sex because He knows, better than we do, what is best for us because He designed us. However, this sin is no different than any other - it is still covered by the forgiveness and grace of the cross. All of our failures, even sexual ones, are forgiven by Christ. It is often said that one can never get their "purity" back -this is totally false. When the Bible refers to Christians as the "Bride of Christ dressed in white" it is reminding us that Jesus, when He died, made us all pure in His eyes, regardless of anything we have done.

It is understandable why the temptation for premarital sex is so great these days. Sometimes, when we feel very strongly for someone, we just don't know any other way to express what we feel. Sometimes words don't seem strong enough to express our feelings for someone we truly care for and love. Sometimes we may really want to be intimate with someone but feel too scared to be intimate in more appropriate ways.

Sadly, in some homes healthy intimacy just doesn't happen and isn't learned. There may be no physical affection or hugging, mom and dad may be fighting constantly, the family may seldom, if ever, express feelings of love and encouragement. My home, when I was growing up, was like this and many homes of young people today are like this. If someone comes out of such a home and they meet someone whom they care for, they may not have learned the tools to show how they feel in a healthy way or are afraid to do so because it was not accepted back at home. Sex can seem a safe substitute for a much more frightening and much deeper commitment.

Many times pre-marriage sexuality seems the best and safest way to express our desire for intimacy and love, but it is not the best way. Often, sex before marriage creates confusion, guilt and internal conflict that ruins a great relationship with a great person, a relationship headed for a lifetime of marriage and happiness. How sad that would be.

As tough as it may be, letting God make the rules about sex is far better - since He is the one who designed sex in the first place.

What if you KNOW you are with the person you are going to marry? What if you just live together without being married, but you never have sex with another and you stay together?

Marriage does require a wedding. Why? The covenant of marriage is no different - in fact very similar - to the covenant between Christians and Christ. When we enter into the covenant of marriage, as with a covenant with God - it is to be a public declaration of commitment, sealed in front of witnesses who will support us and hold us accountable. When I baptize new Christians -I often explain to them that this is their "Wedding ceremony" with God.

As to KNOWING that this is the person you will marry so why not have sex...........

a.) If so sure -than it won't hurt to wait a bit until the wedding takes place. Again - a public marriage creates the accountability that provides the boundaries to keep sex contained within the husband and wife relationship.

b.) Again - the unfortunate truth is that having sex with someone too early- even if you think "I know I'll marry this person" can result in damage to the relationship. I know folks who have lost a very special person partly because of their inability to wait on sexual intimacy.

c.) Lastly - there is so much more to being in love than sex - being best friends, being able to just talk about every subject, finding enjoyment with each other even during times of crisis, struggle or sacrifice, sharing hopes and dreams - even huge hopes and dreams, standing by each other through failures and frustrations and doing stuff that is only fun because you're with a person you just love being with. The best time to enjoy these things is before taking on the added responsibilities of career and children. There will always be opportunities for sex - but time to just be friends and do fun stuff doesn't last. These, far more than sex, are the stuff that you will look back on and smile.

Body Piercings

Body piercing is certainly not a sin when done with parental approval. Body piercing ranges greatly within a cultural context from the accepted norm to the outlandish. American culture accepts pierced ears as an everyday beauty enhancement while many tribal cultures accept more severe piercings the same way. The real question, when it comes to body piercing, tattoos etc.. is why are we doing it? Most folks in American culture decide to adorn themselves with piercing or tattoos to make a "Statement" of some kind. We often won't admit it, but usually we are trying to make a statement to the world about who we are. It is one way to exclaim "I am different" or "Don't lump me in with everyone else". It is a very good thing to show people we are unique and different. Scripture tells us that we are expected by God to make sure the world knows that we are unique, different and not like the crowd, but we are to express that uniqueness differently than most folks. Consider the following text:

1 Peter 3:2-4Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

God challenges us by saying that piercings, tattoos, nice clothes etc.. are not enough. We need to do something even more difficult to show the world that we are unique --- we need to BE unique. Our character, our behavior, our goals, our passions - that sets us apart from the crowd far more than a piercings or tattoos which anyone can get for 50 bucks. If people are not impressed with who we are - without outrageous decorations -what does that say about us? Our Savior was "Pierced" but the actual nails into skin were not what made it so special - it was who He was and what He did that made Christ adored for eternity. Christ was greater than the nails that pierced Him. To depend on piercings, tattoos or nice clothes to stand out is a mediocre way to get attention in a very shallow world.

Beginning In Jesus - session 1

Jesus: The Teacher
Session 1

We all have our own undestandings of right and wrong-our own systems of values and judgments we consider true. Unfortunately, we often miss the mark with our limited wisdom and believe things are true even when they're not.
..
Jesus spent a lot of time teaching people the truth about God. He taught all kinds of audiences-from gigantic crowds to small groups. He even taught one-on-one to help individuals discover and understand truth. As a teacher, Jesus wasn't interested in just imparting information;rather, he taught to change lives.

Mark 1:14-28
The Calling of the First Disciples
14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"
16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 18At once they left their nets and followed him.
19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit 21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus, The Lord

The choice we all make is this: either we're good enough on our own, through our belief system and morality, to make it to heaven; or we're not, and we have to cast ourselves on the mercy of God through Christ to get there. Those are the only two systems of religion in the world. One is a religion of human merit; the other recognizes that we find true merit in Christ alone, and it comes to the sinner only by grace. There may be a thousand different religious names and terms, but only two religions really exist. There is the truth of divine accomplishement, which says God has done it all in Christ, and there is the lie of human achievement, which says we have some sort of hand in saving ourselves. One is the religion of grace, the other the religion of works. One offers salvation by faith alone; the other offers salvation by the flesh.
(excerpt taken from "Jesus", passage written by John MacArthur)

Jesus, The Mighty Warrior

Then I saw heaven opened, and there before me was a white horse. The rider on the horse is called Faithful and True, and he is right when he judges and makes war. His eyes are like burnig fire, and on his head are many crowns....Out of the rider's mouth comes a sharp sword that he will use to defeat the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will crush out the wine in the winepress of the terrible anger of God of the Almighty. On his robe and on his upper leg was written this name: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:11-16)

Sabbath Question

Why we worship on Sunday..

First: Saturday is the actual Jewish Sabbath established in the old testament. However, the Sabbath has nothing to do with our day of worship

A.) "The Sabbath" is a commandment of the Law. Christians are no longer held to the law they are saved by Grace

Col 2:13-1713 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.NIV
Rom 7:66 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. NIV

Rom 10:4: 4
Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

The law of the sabbath is no different than the Old Testament laws of sacrificing animals, worshipping in the temple or the laws about not eating certain foods.....Christ fulfilled all of these laws and now we serve the law of Christ - Love and Grace through faith. We are under a "new covenant"

B.) The Church began to gather for worship on the first day of the week (Sunday) because that was the day Christ Rose from the dead. It has been known, since the New Testament as "The Lord's Day"

Acts 20:7

7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.NIV

1 Cor 16:1-36:1 Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 3 Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem.NIV
Rev 1:9-10

9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,
Those who would still enforce the regulations of the Sabbath have entirely missed the message of the cross.........Saved By GRACE not by LAW

Hope this helps

Salty Dogma

Salty dogma - Interview with Bono
Bono gives an explicit confession of being saved by Grace, not Karma by Gene Edward Veith
Is Bono, the lead singer and songwriter for the rock group U2, a Christian? He says he is and writes about Christianity in his lyrics. Yet many people question whether Bono is "really" a Christian, due to his notoriously bad language, liberal politics, and rock star antics (though he has been faithfully married for 23 years). But in a new book of interviews, Bono in Conversation by Michka Assayas, Bono, though using some salty language, makes an explicit confession of faith.
The interviewer, Mr. Assayas, begins by asking Bono, Doesn't he think "appalling things" happen when people become religious? Bono counters, "It's a mind-blowing concept that the God who created the Universe might be looking for company, a real relationship with people, but the thing that keeps me on my knees is the difference between Grace and Karma."
The interviewer asks, What's that? "At the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. You know, what you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics—in physical laws—every action is met by an equal or an opposite one," explains Bono. "And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that. . . . Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I've done a lot of stupid stuff."
The interviewer asks, Like what? "That's between me and God. But I'd be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge," says Bono. "It doesn't excuse my mistakes, but I'm holding out for Grace. I'm holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don't have to depend on my own religiosity."
Then the interviewer marvels, "The Son of God who takes away the sins of the world. I wish I could believe in that."
"The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death," replies Bono. "It's not our own good works that get us through the gates of Heaven."
The interviewer marvels some more: "That's a great idea, no denying it. Such great hope is wonderful, even though it's close to lunacy, in my view. Christ has His rank among the world's great thinkers. But Son of God, isn't that farfetched?"
Bono comes back, "Look, the secular response to the Christ story always goes like this: He was a great prophet, obviously a very interesting guy, had a lot to say along the lines of other great prophets, be they Elijah, Muhammad, Buddha, or Confucius. But actually Christ doesn't allow you that. He doesn't let you off that hook. Christ says, No. I'm not saying I'm a teacher, don't call me teacher. I'm not saying I'm a prophet. I'm saying: 'I'm the Messiah.' I'm saying: 'I am God incarnate.' . . . So what you're left with is either Christ was who He said He was—the Messiah—or a complete nutcase. . . . The idea that the entire course of civilization for over half of the globe could have its fate changed and turned upside-down by a nutcase, for me that's farfetched."
What is most interesting in this exchange is the reaction of the interviewer, to whom Bono is, in effect, witnessing. This hip rock journalist starts by scorning what he thinks is Christianity. But it is as if he had never heard of grace, the atonement, the deity of Christ, the gospel. And he probably hadn't. But when he hears what Christianity is actually all about, he is amazed.

Teens & Alcohol Marketing

'Local Losers' targeted for marketing alcohol to youths
By Debbi Farr Baker
UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM
2:15 p.m. June 22, 2005
SAN DIEGO – Local high school students came together Wednesday to unveil their "Local Losers" campaign, targeting area stores that sell merchandise the students say promote underage drinking and alcohol advertisers they say are taking advantage of young people.
According to the San Diego Youth Council, several stores throughout San Diego County sell everything from clothing, T-shirts and flip-flops to picture frames and key chains that promote alcohol use.
At some stores, teenagers can buy T-shirts with slogans on them like, "Totally sober; don't talk to me, I'm not drunk yet" and "Bad girls chug, good girls drink quickly", margarita-flavored lip balm, candy-flavored shot glasses and socks and pillows emblazoned with martini glasses, according to youth council members Cary Robbins and T.C. Robbins, who spoke at the event.
"Our goal is to let the community know that youth are being targeted by alcohol and we don't want it," said council member Sierra Papp. "By starting (consumers) at an early age, the alcohol industry tries to gain a lifetime membership and reaps an enormous amount of benefits at our expense."
The council members named Abercrombie & Fitch and Icing – which cater particularly to young people – and Target as stores that sell such products. The teens criticized Target for selling shirts bearing beer company logos. They said Abercrombie & Fitch has since stopped selling the T-shirts with drinking messages on them.
The students spoke before an audience that included public health experts, law enforcement officials and government representatives at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley.
They also presented their "wall of shame", a slide show that featured magazine ads for liquor showing young people drinking and having fun and presenting a pink-and-green martini glass that looked like candy.
The students said high schools also hand out products that promote alcohol. Beer mugs and martini glasses were handed out to boys and girls at both Scripps Ranch and Mission Bay high schools as prom keepsakes, they said. They were engraved with the schools' logos.
The Youth Council says that pro-alcohol T-shirts and alcohol stemware are not appropriate for high schoolers, as alcohol kills more teens than any other drug combined and is the No. 1 drug of choice among young people. They also maintain these items aren't any more appropriate for college students, because more than 70,000 students aged 18-24 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault.
"We are tired of wearing dangerous messages that fuel the alcohol industry on our backs – literally," Papp said.
The students also kicked off their "Do the Math" counter advertising campaign by wearing T-shirts displaying facts about underage drinking, such as that nine teens die every day from alcohol-related incidents, that alcohol kills five times more teens than all other drugs combined, and that every 30 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related crash.
The group also cited research done by Dartmouth Medical School in 2004 that says teens who wear alcohol promotional items are more that one-and-a-half times more likely to try drinking than their peers. Research also shows that early heavy alcohol use has negative effects on the development of the brain.
The news conference was part of a quarterly meeting of the national prevention coalition, San Diego County Policy Panel on Youth Access to Alcohol.
The San Diego Youth Council, founded in 2000, is a public advocacy group whose mission is to reduce underage drinking by combating the messages that young people are exposed to through the media, on radio, television, magazines and billboards.

Survey: Most U.S. Doctors Believe in God

By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical WriterWed Jun 22, 9:03 PM ET

A survey examining religion in medicine found that most U.S. doctors believe in God and an afterlife — a surprising degree of spirituality in a science-based field, researchers say.
In the survey of 1,044 doctors nationwide, 76 percent said they believe in God, 59 percent said they believe in some sort of afterlife, and 55 percent said their religious beliefs influence how they practice medicine.
"We were surprised to find that physicians were as religious as they apparently are," said Dr. Farr Curlin, a researcher at the University of Chicago's MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
"There's certainly a deep-seated cultural idea that science and religion are at odds," and previous studies have suggested that fewer than half of scientists believe in God, Curlin said Wednesday.
A previous survey showed about 83 percent of the general population believes in God.
But while medicine is science-based, doctors differ from scientists who work primarily in a laboratory setting, and their direct contact with patients in life-and-death situations may explain the differing views, Curlin said.
The study is based on responses to questionnaires mailed in 2003. It is to appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine and was released online to subscribers earlier this month.
Dr. J. Edward Hill, president of the American Medical Association, said religion and medicine are completely compatible, as long as doctors do not force their own beliefs on patients.
Belief in "a supreme being ... is vitally important to physicians' ability to take care of patients, particularly the end-of-life issues that we deal with so often," said Hill, a family physician from Tupelo, Miss.
Religions among physicians are more varied than among the general population, the survey found. While more than 80 percent of the U.S. population is Protestant or Catholic, 60 percent of doctors said they were from either group.
Compared with the general population, more doctors were Jewish — 14 percent vs. 2 percent; Hindu — 5 percent vs. less than 1 percent; and Muslim — almost 3 percent vs. less than 1 percent.

NO FEAR

I John 4:18

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

From Esther

I just read the recent blog. How amazing!!! This is a wonderful testimony to how God is moving, even in the people we sometimes give up on. The Christian philosophers are even shocked! We should never be surprised or cease having faith, when we surrender our lives and talents into God's hands, and watch Him form them into the miraculous!

World's Most Famous Atheist

This is a very interesting article once you stick with it (I know it seems boring at first). Adam this is right up your alley. It is also filled with names of prominent Christian scholars that you may want to google and research for their published debates and articles.

Thinking Straighter
Why the world's most famous atheist now believes in God.
by James A. Beverley posted 04/08/2005 09:00 a.m.
Antony Flew, one of the world's leading philosophers, has changed his mind about God. And he has agnostics worried.
Some are mystified and others are angry. Typical of many responses is this one skeptical blogger: "Sounds to me like an old man, confronted by the end of life, making one final desperate attempt at salvation." Richard Carrier of The Secular Web even accuses him of "willfully sloppy scholarship."
His pedigree in philosophy explains the recent media frenzy and controversy. Raised in a Christian home and son of a famous Methodist minister, Flew became an atheist at age 15. A student of Gilbert Ryle's at Oxford, Flew won the prestigious John Locke Prize in Mental Philosophy. He has written 26 books, many of them classics like God and Philosophy and How to Think Straight. A 1949 lecture given to C. S. Lewis's Oxford Socratic Club became one of the most widely published essays in philosophy. The Times Literary Supplement said Flew fomented a change in both the theological and philosophical worlds.
Flew taught at Oxford, Aberdeen, Keele, Reading, and has lectured in North America, Australia, Africa, South America, and Asia. The Times of London referred to him as "one of the most renowned atheists of the past half-century, whose papers and lectures have formed the bedrock of unbelief for many adherents."
Last summer he hinted at his abandonment of naturalism in a letter to Philosophy Now. Rumors began circulating on the internet about Flew's inclinations towards belief in God, and then Richard Ostling broke the story in early December for the Associated Press. According to Craig Hazen, associate professor of comparative religions and apologetics at Biola, the school received more than 35,000 hits on their site that contains Flew's interview for Philosophia Christi, the journal of the Evangelical Philosophical Society. At his home in Reading, west of London, Flew told me: "I have been simply amazed by the attention given to my change of mind."
So what exactly is the reason for and nature of his "change of mind"?
Jeffersonian DeistFlew has had to assure former students that he does not now believe in revealed religion. "Even one of my daughters asked if this meant we were going to say grace at meals," he said. "The answer is no."
Flew is also quick to point out that he is not a Christian. "I have become a deist like Thomas Jefferson." He cites his affinity with Einstein who believed in "an Intelligence that produced the integrative complexity of creation." To make things perfectly clear, he told me: "I understand why Christians are excited, but if they think I am going to become a convert to Christ in the near future, they are very much mistaken."
"Are you Paul on the road to Damascus?" I asked him.
"Certainly not."
Comedian Jay Leno suggested a motive for the change on The Tonight Show: "Of course he believes in God now. He's 81 years old." It's something many agnostics have said more seriously. However, Flew is not worried about impending death or post-mortem salvation. "I don't want a future life. I have never wanted a future life," he told me. He assured the reporter for The Times: "I want to be dead when I'm dead and that's an end to it." He even ended an interview with the Humanist Network News by stating: "Goodbye. We shall never meet again."
Flew's U-turn on God lies in a far more significant reality. It is about evidence. "Since the beginning of my philosophical life I have followed the policy of Plato's Socrates: We must follow the argument wherever it leads." I asked him if it was tough to change his mind. "No. It was not hard. I've always engaged in inquiry. If I am shown to have been wrong, well, okay, so I was wrong."
The Impact of Evangelical ScholarsActually, Flew has been rethinking the arguments for a Designer for several years. When I saw him in London in the spring of 2003, he told me he was still an atheist but was impressed by Intelligent Design theorists. By early 2004 he had made the move to deism. Surprisingly, he gives first place to Aristotle in having the most significant impact on him. "I was not a specialist on Aristotle, so I was reading parts of his philosophy for the first time." He was aided in this by The Rediscovery of Wisdom, a work on Aristotle by David Conway, one of Flew's former students.
Flew also cites the influence of Gerald Schroeder, an Israeli physicist, and Roy Abraham Varghese, author of The Wonder of the World and an Eastern Rite Catholic. Flew appeared with both scientists at a New York symposium last May where he acknowledged his changed conviction about the necessity for a Creator. In the broader picture, both Varghese and Schroeder, author of The Hidden Face of God, argue from the fine-tuning of the universe that it is impossible to explain the origin of life without God. This forms the substance of what led Flew to move away from Darwinian naturalism.
I studied with Flew in 1985 in Toronto, and he told me then about the positive impression he had of emerging evangelical scholarship. That year Varghese had arranged a Dallas conference on God, and included atheists, like Flew, and theists. That same year Flew had his first debate with historian Gary Habermas of Liberty University on the resurrection of Jesus, recorded in Did Jesus Rise from the Dead? They have debated twice since on the same topic.
Flew has also debated Terry Miethe, who holds doctorates in both philosophy and religion, on the existence of God, and he has been involved in philosophical exchanges with J. P. Moreland, another well-known Christian philosopher. In 1998 he had a major debate in Madison, Wisconsin, with William Lane Craig, research professor at Talbot, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the famous BBC debate between Bertrand Russell and F. C. Copleston, the brilliant Catholic philosopher.
In Reading, I asked Flew more explicitly about the impact of these and other scholars. "Who amazes you the most of the defenders of Christian theism?"
He replied, "I would have to put Alvin Plantinga pretty high," and he also complimented Miethe, Moreland, and Craig for their philosophical skills. He regards Richard Swinburne, the Oxford philosophy of religion professor, as the leading figure in the United Kingdom. "There is really no competition to him." He said that Habermas has made "the most impressive case for Christian theism on the basis of New Testament writings."
These Christian philosophers have uniform respect for Flew as a person and as a thinker. Craig spoke of him as "an enduring figure in positivistic philosophy" and was "rather surprised by his giving up his atheistic views." He, Miethe, and Habermas have found Flew to be a perfect gentleman both in public debate and private conversations. Swinburne says Flew has always been a tough thinker, though less dogmatic as the years went by. Plantinga, the founder of the Society of Christian Philosophers, said that Flew's change is "a tribute to his open-mindedness as well as an indication of the strength of current broadly scientific arguments against atheism."
What Holds Him Back from Christianity?Flew's preference for deism and continued dislike of alleged revelation emerge from two deep impulses in his philosophy. First, Flew has an almost unshakable view against the supernatural, a view that he learned chiefly from David Hume, the 18th-century Scottish philosopher. Flew, a leading authority on Hume, wrote the classic essay on miracles in The Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
What is rather surprising in Flew's dogmatism is that he believes Hume did not and could not prove that miracles are, strictly speaking, impossible. "If this is the case, why not be open to God's possible intervention?" I asked. He replied by saying that the laws of nature are so well established that testimonies about miracles are easy for him to ignore. He is not impressed by people who hear regularly from God. He did concede, reluctantly and after considerable discussion, that God could, in principle, puncture his bias against the supernatural.
Of more significance, Flew detests any notion that a loving God would send any of his creatures to eternal flames. He cannot fathom how intelligent Christians can believe this doctrine. He even said in his debate with Terry Miethe that he has entertained the thought that the Creator should punish, though not endlessly, only those who defend the notion of eternal torment. On this matter, Flew is willing to entertain fresh approaches to divine justice. In fact, he had just obtained Lewis's book The Great Divorce in order to assess Lewis's unique interpretation on the topic of judgment.
When I asked Flew about his broader case for deism, he asked rhetorically: "Why should God be concerned about what his creatures think about him anymore than he should be directly concerned with their conduct?" I reminded him of biblical verses that also ask rhetorically: "He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?" (Ps. 94:9) It seems incredible to argue that any human cares more about the world than God does. "Is the Creator really morally clueless?" I asked. Flew responded to what he called this "interesting argument" with openness. Moreland, who teaches at Biola, says he hopes that Flew "will become even more curious about whether or not God has ever made himself clearly known to humanity."
Unlike many other modern philosophers, Flew has a high regard for the person of Jesus. Early in the interview, he stated rather abruptly: "There's absolutely no good reason for believing in Islam, whereas in Christianity you have the charismatic figure of Jesus, the defining example of what is meant by charismatic." By charismatic, he means dynamic and impressive. He dismissed views that Jesus never existed as "ridiculous."
Later I asked, "Are you basically impressed with Jesus?"
"Oh yes. He is a defining instance of a charismatic figure, perplexing in many ways, of course." Beyond this, Flew remains agnostic about orthodox views of Jesus, though he has made some very positive remarks about the case for the Resurrection. In the journal Philosophia Christi he states: "The evidence for the Resurrection is better than for claimed miracles in any other religion." No, he still does not believe that Jesus rose from the dead. However, he told me, the case for an empty tomb is "considerably better than I thought previously."
Plantinga, the dean of Christian philosophers, told me that the radical change in Christian scholarship over Flew's career has been remarkable. When Flew originally attacked theism more than 50 years ago, there were few Christians working in philosophy. Now there are a large and growing number of scholars committed to intellectual defense of the gospel. It is, of course, no small matter that one of the world's leading philosophers has moved somewhat closer to the side of the angels.
James A. Beverley is professor of Christian apologetics at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto.

Food For Thought

Taken from "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel

Coincidence?
Could Jesus have fulfilled the prophecies by coincidence. Maybe several people in history have fit these predictions, but Jesus happened to have a better public relations agent and so now he's the one everyone remembers.
But reading a book by Dr. Peter Stoner, a science professor, undermined that objection. Stoner worked with 600 students to come up with their best estimate of the mathematical probability of just 8 Old Testament prophecies being fulfilled in any one person living down to the present time. Stoner then calculated that the probability of anyone fulfilling all 8 would be one chance in a hundred million billion. That's a figure with 17 zeroes behind it!

Want a more human, less mathematical, picture of those odds? Imagine the entire world covered with white tile that is one-and-a-half inches square-every bit of dry land on the planet-with a gold star painted on the bottom of just one of the tiles. Then picture a person being allowed to wander for a lifetime around all 7 continents. He would be permitted to bend down only one time and pick up a single piece of tile. What are the odds it would be the one tile with the gold star on its reverse side? One chance in a hundred million billion-the same as just 8 of the Old Testament prophecies coming true in any one person throughout history!

Now, you can agree or disagree with the estimates that the students came up with for Stoner's calculations. After all, prophecies can be difficult to quantify and assessments can vary. You could come up with your own calculations. But when I examined the prophecies myself, I had to agree with Stoner's conclusion: the chances of anyone coincidentally fulfilling these ancient predictions would surely be prohibitive.
Sample it for yourself, read Isaiah 53

Global Day of Prayer

This Sunday is
The Global Day of Prayer.
I will take any of the ignite class that would like to go. It is going to be held at the Valencia High School stadium from 3-6pm. There is stadium seating, or bring beach chairs and blankets. This is a very exciting opportunity to enter in with a large portion of the body of Christ from around the world in worship and prayer! I will pick up people for a ride at 2pm in the EACC parking lot. Please let me know on Sunday Morning if you need a ride!
Thanks,Esther Rose

Adam's Question

?If God is everywhere, then is He in some way present in hell? (based on the understanding that hell is the complete absence of God.)

?If God is everywhere then how can sin exist, yet not be able to exist in God's presence?

Answer from Pastor Robb

In essence - hell is what happened when we were thrown out of paradise because we rejected God. Perfect paradise is God's domain, but when humanity rejects God they also reject his perfection and His paradise....what we are left with is imperfection and the absence of God which is Hell. How can God be omnipresent, yet not be in Hell? By his purposeful restraint of power he keeps himself away from the people who choose to reject Him (Satan, Demons, Unrepentant Sinners). However, at His choosing, He freely invades the dominion of Hell, as He did after the crucifixion when Christ "took our sins and descended into Hell to set the prisoners free" and in later times when He will go down and destroy Satan forever. (The Satan Smackdown)

The bottom line is - if God fully used his power of omni presence -than anything not perfect like Him would be destroyed. God chooses to restrain this power until as many who want Him can be made perfect through the blood of Christ.

Prayer Request Reminder

I hope everyone is doing well. I helped in the Special Ed. class for the first time on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a wonderful experience and they invited me back! I hope to assist during their language arts time at least once a week. The teacher and assistant are both extremely talented and I feel like I have already learned soooo much. There is a long tangled road ahead of me before I even start toward a teaching credential. Please pray for guidance.

Please continue to pray for

  • Josiah Sturbis - 5yr old with cancer
  • Armed forces and their families
  • Everyone's academic pressures "GRADES!!", and family relationships
  • Kim's search for future employment and her current class
  • The Strangers we spoke of: Mrs. G., the family Jessica mentioned who are involved in a law suit regarding a teacher's brutal comment, the two young children with serious health problems I saw at the pediatrician.
  • Jessica and the mess of a speech election and what to do with the "results"

This week we will be focusing on God's Word. How does it fit in you life?

A Message from Esther Rose

I'm sorry I missed the group last week. I really look forward to connecting with all of you each Sunday, even in a small way. I am so thankful and proud of the people God has brought to ignite! I'm sure whoever might come into your paths will be blessed. Continue to press on, even when life throws you difficult challenges. God is always there with you to help you through them!

Prayer Requests April 24

Hello everyone! I'm sorry I have been sooooo late posting this week. My reason is actually a prayer request. My youngest son Hayden bravely undertook his "kindergarten" shots on Monday which included 4 injections plus a blood sample! He was brave and did not complain once. However his right thigh has become a huge red welt, hot to the touch and painful. It is now about 10 inches in diameter. We have been to the doctor's everyday. He is now on antibiotics and we have another apt. this afternoon. What a week! I hope you all are doing well.

Please continue to pray for the Santibanez family, specifically Tom's recovery. Prayer for Jessica regarding speech. Continued prayer for our armed forces, oversees, at home, across country, whether they are active or are now home. Pray for their families and the struggles these men and women will have due to the sacrifices they have made for us. Pray for OUR church that it is able to reach out to those who don't know the Savior's love or don't know that they can learn more about Him at a little church just around the corner.

A new prayer request came in last night. Josiah Sturbis (aprox 5yrs old) has a cancerous tumor. This little guy has already survived a bout with cancer. Josiah is a brother to Samantha, Hannah, and Mariah who have been in Youth Worship. Please pray for this family they have limited funds and there are eight children in all.

I will keep you posted if there is any new information regarding Josiah.

This week is Family Sunday, after celebrating birthdays and anniversaries ignite worship will be having our monthly prayer service. This week I would like to add a new facet to own prayer time, Strangers. Keep your eyes and hearts open to the strangers around you. Notice the look in their eyes, how they interact to their surroundings and how their surrounding react to them. Capture them in your minds and bring those strangers to us for prayer.

Hi!! from Kimberly

Hello fellow ignite members-

Hello!!!! Even though I haven't been there on a consistent basis, I wanted to let you know how much each one of you means to me and I consider it a blessing to be included in the awesome discussions that take place during ignite worship. In regards to meeting the challenge of speaking honestly and directly to God......there have been times when I have spoken to God these thoughts... "that I don't always feel like he is there and I sometimes think he isn't real". It really scares me when I have those thoughts, but after I pray to HIM about it I always feel a stronger bond has been created between us and I feel HIS presence. I know its HIM when I feel a deep calm and inner strength come over me.

I hope everyone has a great week and I look forward to touching base with you in person.

Just for Fun Posted by Hello

A CHALLENGE - MET!!!

Last week (4/3) I tossed out a challenge...Sometime during the week tell God how you REALLY feel about Him. Honestly tell him everything! Don't hold back. If you are at all interested in having a personal relationship with him this is the necessary first step. Think about it, how would you feel about someone who acted like they wanted to be your friend but you had inside information that they actually already had a very strong personal and negative opinion about you? Would you play along? Would you hold back? Would you turn your back on their 'fake' efforts?

God I think you are...

God I feel you are...

This week I was greatly impressed by those who took a daring step to meet the challenge! Jessica and Esther stepped out in faith and communicated with God in a very raw, soul open way, zero edit ! I'm very proud of you both for your courage and even more thankful that you both chose to share your experiences with us. Every ignite worship I walk away deeply affected, thank you all for that. If you haven't taken the challenge, please do! Take encouragement from two of your fellow ignite members, neither one of them was struck by lightning!

Check out the following post for prayer requests.

Something to Think About

Is there a point when parents are no longer responsible for the actions of their "children"? Is it when their kids become adults? At what point do the "children" become accountable for their own choices?

Many people agree that adults are accountable for their own actions, even if they had terrible parents. If a person has the ability to understand right from wrong then they are accountable for their own choices.

Then why is it that we continuously blame The Creator for the actions of his "children"? When does the creation become accountable?

As you continue on your journey toward understanding and knowing God ask yourself this question...

Am I holding the Creator accountable for the actions of his creation? Should God be blamed for my actions?

Week 4 Scripture

Psalm 42:1
Psalm 37:4-5
Psalm 138:8
Psalm 147:17-19
Isaiah 50:4-5

Psalm 37

Psalm 37
Of David. 1 Do not fret because of evil men
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
4 Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD ;
trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret-it leads only to evil.
9 For evil men will be cut off,
but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy great peace.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword
and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.

16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.

18 The days of the blameless are known to the LORD ,
and their inheritance will endure forever.
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:
The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,
they will vanish-vanish like smoke.

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;
22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses will be cut off.

23 If the LORD delights in a man's way,
he makes his steps firm;
24 though he stumble, he will not fall,
for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;
their children will be blessed.

27 Turn from evil and do good;
then you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the LORD loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.

They will be protected forever,
but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off;
29 the righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks what is just.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
his feet do not slip.

32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
seeking their very lives;
33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power
or let them be condemned when brought to trial.

34 Wait for the LORD
and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.

37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
there is a future [b] for the man of peace.
38 But all sinners will be destroyed;
the future [c] of the wicked will be cut off.

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD ;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

Easter Tidbit

Excerpt taken from The Case For Easter, by Lee Strobel

"Some people have tried to cast doubt on the gospel accounts by attacking the crucifixion story," I said. "For instance, and article in the Harvard Theological Review concluded many years ago that there was 'astonishing little evidence that the feet of a crucified person were ever pierced by nails.' instead, the article said, the victim's hands and feet were tied to the cross by ropes. Won't you concede that this raises credibility problems with the New Testament account?"

Dr. Metherell moved forward until he was sitting on a the edge of his chair. "No," he said, "because archaeology has now established that the use of nails was historical-although I'll certainly concede that ropes were indeed sometimes used."

"What's the evidence?"

"In 1968 archaeologists in Jerusalem found the remains of about three dozen Jews who had died during the uprising against Rome around AD 70. One victim, whose name was apparently Yohanan, had been crucified. And sure enough, they found a seven-inch nail still driven into his feet, with small pieces of olive wood from the cross still attached. This was excellent archaeological confirmation of a key detail in the gospels' description of the Crucifixion."

I know it feels great to have our faith defended by "facts", but don't forget...

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them . Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said, to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Growing to be Like Jesus

Every Christian struggles on some level with devotional time. It's a difficult habit to learn and to maintain. In the beginning, the rewards can't always be seen immediately, so we have a hard time realizing its true value. Over time, we become distracted, forgetting just how valuable time with the Creator is.

If you plan to take your faith seriously for the rest of your life, establishing this habit may be a struggle. It's been a struggle since the days of Jesus. When you look at the event that took place at Martha's house you may feel better about yourself and gain some insight into what's really important.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42

ignite with prayer

Good Morning! I hope everyone had a great week and if not you came to the right place!

The first Sunday of every month ignite worship has set apart a morning for prayer. As you are all aware Easter is coming! Easter, a day set apart for the pure focus on the saving resurrection of our Lord! As a church Easter has many levels of meaning and opportunity. Many folks only attend on Christmas and Easter. Visitors and Members alike also come with "primed" hearts, they are prepared to hear about the resurrection. For some this is a day to completely give in to Christ's wonderful gift, for others they come prepared with steeled hearts and they keep their minds busy with Easter brunch and bunnies. Anything to stop the Holy Spirit from softening their hearts to our Lord, their Savior. With these things in mind in addition to praying for each other let us focus on how OUR church can be prepared to present the gospel on Easter to those desperately in need of it. Don't just pray for the Pastor or the Worship team, remember people make judgments all kinds of weird stuff! Pray for the impression the facilities makes, how inviting "members" are, clean bathrooms, kids playing nicely in the playground, etc. etc!

Please scroll down for other prayer requests and topics.

Then we will be splitting into prayer groups (it is Family Sunday) and having our monthly prayer session. Keep this in mind and have prayer requests, and praises ready! This weeks prayer theme will be EASTER and OUR church.

I hope to see you all on Sunday at 9:30 sharp. Have a good week, I am praying for all of you.

God Leads Us Along

In shady green pastures,
so rich and so sweet,
God leads His dear children along;
Where the water's cool flow bathes the weary one's feet,
God leads His dear children along.

Some thro' the waters, some thro' the flood,
Some thro' the fire, but all thro' the blood;
Some thro' great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

Sometimes on the mount
where the sun shines so bright,
God leads His dear children;
Sometime in the valley,
in darkest of night,
God leads His dear children along.

Some thro' the waters, some thro' the flood,
Some thro' the fire, but all thro' the blood;
Some thro' great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

Though sorrows befall us
and Satan oppose,
God leads His dear children;
Through grace we can conquer,
defeat all our foes,
God leads His dear children along.

Some thro' the waters, some thro' the flood,
Some thro' the fire, but all thro' the blood;
Some thro' great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

We missed you Priscilla, Kim, Adam and Garrett. Thank you Amanda, Esther and Jessica for your open, honest and courageous participation. I am grateful for your trust and consider it an honor to be allowed to interact with each of you on such a deep level.

Please remember our ignite worship covenant. One aspect was faithful attendance and another was to pray consistently for one another. With those two commitments in mind here are this weeks prayer requests.

  • Continued prayer for Jessica and her family during this time of grief.
  • Pray for those in pain (emotional, spiritual, physical), almost every member of ignite worship is dealing with some form of pain.
  • For Amanda's Uncle, help through a very difficult time and for his child.
  • For our Church - may each of our members (old and new) feel an increased ownership of our church and mission without possessiveness.

Galatians 5:16-25

16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Growing to Be Like Jesus

This week we will be discussing the Holy Spirit. The Bible contains word pictures of the Holy Spirit that help us understand who he is and how he works. Here are four:

  • He is like wind blowing among us, acting powerfully, even though he is unseen (John 3:8).
  • He is like fire in his power and brilliance (Acts 2:1-4).
  • He gushes up from within a believer like a spring of water (John 7:37-39), giving life and refreshment.
  • He is pure and sacred, making us holy temples where he dwells (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Wind, water, fire-all images of something powerful, uncontrollable, and beautiful.

When you put your faith in Jesus, and are obedient in baptism, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within you. He promises to change your character, produce fruit in your life, and give you new strength when you rely on him. He's an amazing presence that most Christians don't understand and a power that most don't rely on .

Dare to Grow Like Christ Posted by Hello

GROWING TO BE LIKE JESUS

DIDISCIPLESHIP

Jesuss came to save the world, and to that end He died, but on His way to the cross He concentrated His life on making a few disciples. These men were taught to do the same, until through the process of reproduction, the gospel of the kingdom would reach to the ends of the earth.

The way Jesus "lived" became a pattern to all who follow in His steps-a principle made all the more clear in the command to "make disciples of all nations." How they are made, of course, will be conditioned on particular gifts and roles in society, but everyone who believes on Christ is called to His work within his own area of influence (friends, family, school, workplace).

Taken from "The Lost Art of Disciple Making" by Leroy Eims

As believers we have the responsibility (command from Christ) to go out and teach others. The ability to teach (disciple) others for Christ is hinged on how strong your personal faith and relationship with Him is. During this next series of 6 sessions we will be focusing on building that faith and relationship. You already have the responsibility, now is your chance to acquire the skills to fulfill it. Are you ready? Will you seize this opportunity? Don't forget we (all of your fellow ignite worship members) will be right here with you.
This Weeks Session's Scriptural Foundation:
  • Hebrews chapter 11
  • Hebrews 12:1-3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18

Our faces are not covered with a veil. We all display the Lords' glory. We are being changed to become more like him so that we have more and more glory. And the glory comes from the Lord, who is the Holy Spirit.

  • Philippians 3:13-14

Brothers and sisters, I don't consider that I have taken hold of it yet. But here is the one thing I do. I forget what is behind me. I push hard toward what is ahead of me. I move on toward the goal to win the prize. God has appointed me to win it. The heavenly prize is Christ Jesus himself.

  • 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

  • Colossians 1:28-29

We preach about him. With all the wisdom we have, we warn and teach everyone. When we bring them to God, we want them to be perfect as people who belong to Christ. That's what I'm working for. I work hard with all of Christ's strength. His strength works powerfully in me.

  • Colossians 1:9-10

That's why we have not stopped praying for you. We have been praying for you since the day we heard about you. We have been asking God to fill you with the knowledge of what he wants. We pray that he will give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. We pray that you will lead a life that is worthy of the Lord. We pray that you will please him in every way. So we want you to bear fruit in every good thing you do. We want you to grow to know to God better.

No Regrets

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, a younger believer Paul had mentored. Do you have a Timothy-a person you're influencing spiritually? (They don't have to be younger, it could be ANYONE who sees your life.)
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day -and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
Paul says he's fought the good fight. How would you describe the "fights" you've recently fought? Would they be considered good from God's point of view?
We impact peoples lives everyday.
We can't exist without leaving an impression on this world.
With that in mind how do you choose to run the race?

NO REGRETS

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked" (Luke 12:48)

At first glance you may think that you are off the hook with this one because, "you don't have much", think again....We each have been given forgiveness and eternal life through the blood sacrifice of the Creator. Second glance?

This Week - God or Idols?

A simple definition of idol worship is "something or someone who is an object of your affection." An idol doesn't have to be a little ceramic statue. It can be television, instant messaging, a boyfriend or girlfriend, a car, money, friends, a collection of autographed baseball cards...basically anything that you love more than God.
No one wants to admit to worshiping an idol. It sounds so weird-even evil. But clues are what we spend our money on, what we feel we can't live with out, and where we turn when we feel hurt, frustrated, or empty.

Maybe you find it hard to believe, but most Christians worship an idol at some point during their spiritual journeys. You can take a step forward (or a lot of steps) in your spiritual journey when you identify your idols and surrender them to God.

In this weeks session we will be discussing your idols and ways to keep them from taking God's role in your life. A life focused on worshiping God can have no other idols.

(taken from LifeTogether, Surrendering, chapter 5)

6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6

19Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-24

Worthy of Worship

Psalm 145
A psalm of praise. Of David. 1 I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you
and extol your name for ever and ever.

3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.
5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works,
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All you have made will praise you, O LORD ;
your saints will extol you.
11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your might,
12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.

The LORD is faithful to all his promises
and loving toward all he has made.

14 The LORD upholds all those who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways
and loving toward all he has made.
18 The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
20 The LORD watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD .
Let every creature praise his holy name
for ever and ever.

2 Corinthians 13:4

"Although (Jesus) died on the cross in weakness, he now lives by the mighty power of God. We, too, are weak, but we live in him and have God's power-the power we use in dealing with you"

Based on this verse, we do have access to God's power. How do you get it from the Spirit into your life?

Food For Thought

Finish this sentence: "I believe God is worth worshiping because..."

Accountability Questions

As we take our next step in ignite worship toward a deeper faith and understanding of God. It's a perfect time to ask ourselves some "Accountability Questions". These questions are meant to help you gauge your current relationship with God. The level you want to meet is up to you.

The Wonder Question
Have you maintained an attitude of awe and wonder toward God?
(Have you minimized him? Placed him in a box? Forgotten to consider his character?)

The Priority Question
Have you maintained a personal devotional time (quiet time) with God?
(Have you allowed yourself to become too busy? Filled your life with too much activity?)

The Morality Question
Have you maintained integrity in the way you live?
(Have you compromised your integrity or the the truth with you actins? Your thoughts? Your words?)

The Listening Question
Are you sensitive to the promptings and leading of the Holy Spirit?
(Have you drowned out his voice with too much noise?)

The Relationships Question
Have you maintained peaceful relationships and resolved conflicts to the best of your ability?
(Have you caused conflict, offended others, or avoided resolving tension?)

The Prayer Question
Have you prayed for others?
(Have your prayers been dominated by your needs? Have you only prayed for the benefit of those you like? Try praying for the BENEFIT of your enemies. )

Who NEEDS to Study???

Posted by Hello

We have a question for all of you:

If the Fellowship Hall at church was made available for studying from aproximately 6-8pm one night a week would it be helpful to any of you (Adam, Brandon, Cody, Garrett, Jessica, Kevin, Priscilla)? The Hall could be open for study use most likely on Wednesday nights, because the church is already open for prayer meeting and Worship rehersal. Rides may be available. The Hall has plenty of tabletop space to spread out your books and a comfy couch, Pastor Robb said he would provide soda for any bookworms. Let us know if you are interested in something like this.

Thanks for Sharing your Light KIM

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Farther in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16 Posted by Hello
Thank you Kim for sharing the story that God is writing in you. I appreciate your willingness to be so open and honest with your past and present. I am looking forward to seeing the great ways God will continue to work in your life and through you the lives of others. Rosemarie
On another note please continue to pray for the members of our group and their friends and family. Here are the list of prayer topics noted last week to provoke your memories: grades, family discord, knee/injury, and a strained friendship.
I'm sorry it took so long for me to post this week, it has been one of those weeks! I hope to see you all at ignite worship. Don't forget to check your calendars to see if you are available for a youth night Dec. 3rd, 4th, or 11th.

Posted by Hello Revelation 21:1-7

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
5He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."
6He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Lazarus - Jesus Wept

Here is the text that Esther was referring to, in her comment posted with "The Question of the Week by Jessica"

Found in John chapter 1

The Death of Lazarus
1Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." 4When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." 5Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days. 7Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." 8"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?" 9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. 10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light." 11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." 12His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." 16Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
Jesus Comforts the Sisters
17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. 21"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." 23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" 27"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." 28And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you." 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34"Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. 35Jesus wept. 36Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39"Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." 40Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" 41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." 43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK by Jessica

Posted by Hello
Jessica's (Excellent) Question
Okay, I had a question. Since committing murder is a sin, and soldiers oversees commit murder all the time, then when they die do they go to hell? And what about the people who commit suicide do they go to hell? Please let me know its somewhat important. Thank you!
Suicide - the unforgivable sin?
Suicide has been considered an unforgivable sin by many people because you are murdering your own body and cannot repent or seek forgiveness if you are dead. However - there is a big difference between--not being-- repentant and being -- unable -- to repent. We go to heaven because Christ died for us and paid the price for our sins - not because of antyhing we do or can't do. Suicide is the result of the disease called depression that causes uncontrollable sadness which often cannot be overcome without special help. Our baptism into Christ is a baptism into loving grace that is more powerful than depression or even suicide.
Eph 2:4-54 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.(NIV)
Soldiers - murderers?
We must remember "Thou shall not kill" really means Thou shall not murder - we know this because there are many Biblical examples of killing that God allows. In the Old Testament - criminals who were a threat to God's people were put to death with God's approval. When the Israelites came into the promised land - they fought bitter enemies to the death -remember David and Goliath? God approved all of these actions. Soldiers are not murdering - they are defending themselves against an enemy. An example in Scripture is in Luke 7 - Jesus healed the daughter of a soldier and called him a man of great faith. God has always allowed his people to defend themselves even if it means killing another.
Killing in war - is a defense of our country and our families. Even in war however, there are matters of faith and character that must be upheld...the humane treatment of prisoners, the care for all life that is not a threat etc.. A soldier -even in war, can be a faithful Christian. While God hates war and violence - he also hates injustice and the oppression of people whose only hope for relief may be an act of war.
Luke 7:3-93 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this,5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue."6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."(NIV)

Hello everyone! I hope your week is off to a good start. We missed you Adam (Straight Hair?), Garrett (Nice tie!), Priscilla (Was it cold in the mountains?). I hope to see you all this Sunday at 9:30. On behalf of all of you Jessica, Esther, Kim and I decided that everyone should, and would be able to read the same Bible passages this week for Sunday's ignite topic - "YOU ARE GIFTED!". Don't forget to begin with prayer. (Reading out loud and jotting down your thoughts as they come also help.)

  • Galatians 6:9-10
  • Acts 9:32-42
  • Philippians 2:19-22
  • Exodus 35: 20-29
  • Matthew 25:37-40

Wanted: Christian Friends

Thank You Garrett, Priscilla, Jessica and Adam for dragging yourselves out of bed every Sunday morning! I know each and everyone of you has a lot going on and the opportunity to sleep must be enticing. This Sunday we discussed people that are, and have been spiritual leaders in our lives. I would like each of you to look at yourselves this week and ask this question. How can I become a spiritual leader or inspiration to another? Seriously, you can be leading someone closer to God (because whether you know it or not, everyday someone is following your example). Where are you leading them? For more on this "leader" stuff go to www.theherdswateringhole.blogspot.com and read the "Why the Herd? (Long Answer)" post.

Got Fruit?

How do you feel about pruning?

In this weeks session we will be discussing how we are or are not growing to be like Jesus. The key verses are John 15:1-8. We will also be going over helpful hints and strategies to help you get the most out of your Bible Study time. If you haven't already done so please set aside some time each day to read your Bible. I know you are busy, you are exhausted, you already have too many things to do and you can't possibly add one more thing! I understand all of those things and I have been there myself. What you need to know is this...
Reading the Bible is not like reading a history book. When you read the Bible you are interacting with God's LIVING Word. Reading the Bible does not TAKE from you. When you interact with God' LIVING Word you are GIVEN what you need. Reading the Bible is not another something on your "to do" list. Spending time with your Creator, in His LIVING word, is something we all NEED to do. Try it, you will be nicely surprised.

It is free and it only takes a few minutes. (Making the blog a members only site was the only way I could stop others from making inappropriate remarks and posting them to our blog.)

  • One last request!!! Please take a moment to read the "Thought Provoker of the Week" post. It is the scripture we will be discussing this week and the question is a good one that needs a little thought. Thought Provoker of the Week

Hebrews 10:23-25 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
QUESTION
Verse 23 says, "for he who promised is faithful." Do Christians put hope in God's promises or do they put faith in God's promises? What's the difference between hope and faith?

GREAT NEWS!!!

Priscilla is getting BAPTIZED this Sunday the 17th!
Posted by Hello
Matthew 3
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
The Baptism of Jesus
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

LOVE the LORD your GOD with all your...

There's no question that Prayer and Bible study will ignite your faith. The question is,
"Are you brave enough to become completely engulfed by it?"
The choice is yours, be a small flicker of light in this world, or a blaze of hope.Posted by Hello

Jessica, Adam, Cody, Garrett, Kevin

Adam, Jessica and Cody we missed you on Sunday!
Jessica and Adam I hope your debate went well.
Cody I hope you are feeling better!
Thank you Garrett and Kevin for participating in the study (despite the early hour)!
I hope to see all of you this Sunday and some friends!
The more participants we have the better the study will be. This small group study thrives on multiple opinions, multiple questions from multiple perspectives. Don't give up on your friends, invite them over and over again. By following up on your original invitation they will know that you really mean it, and it's important to you. I hope to see you all on Sunday.

This Sunday we will be going over the Spiritual Assessment in class, if you can please
read over it this week. (It's posted on this blog.) This is a great tool for anyone interested in getting to know the Creator.

NEW blog for the 10:30 Youth class (THE HERD) www.theherdswateringhole.blogspot.com
The new visual curriculum series starts this week, the multi-media segments are designed specifically for each topic and it's very high end (no home video, no old movie clips).

If you would like to see why we named the session THE HERD check the blog! Trust me it's a good thing!

SPIRITUAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT

Evaluating your spiritual journey is a good thing. Parts of your journey will take you to low spots, while others will lead you to high places. Spiritual growth is not a smooth incline - loopy roller coaster is more like it. When you regularly consider you life, you'll develop an awareness of God's Spirit working in you. Evaluate. Think. Learn. Grow.
The assessment in this section is a tool, not a test. The purpose of this tool is to help you evaluate where you're at in your faith journey. No one is perfect in this life, so don't worry about what score you get. Be honest so you have an accurate idea of how you're doing.

BIBLE STUDY HELP

How to Study the Bible
The Bible is the foundation of all the books in the LIFETOGETHER series. Every session contains a passage from the Bible for your small group to study and apply. When you read the Bible for yourself, you can have discussions based on what you know the Bible says instead of what another member has heard second-or third-hand about the Bible. You also run the risk of depending on your small group for all you Bible study time.
Growing Christians learn to study the Bible on their own so they can learn to grow on their own. Here are some principles about studying the Bible to help you give God's Word a central place in your life.
Choose a Time and Place
Since we're so easily distracted, pick a time when you're at your best. If you're a morning person, then give that time to study the Bible. Find a place away from phones, computers, and TV's, so you are less likely to be interrupted.
Begin with Prayer
Make an effort to acknowledge God's presence. Thank him for his gifts, confess your sins, and ask for his guidance and understanding as you study his love letter to you.
Start with Excitement
We easily take God's Word for granted and forget what an incredible gift we have. God wasn't forced to reach out to us, but he did. He's made it possible for us to know him, understand his directions, and be encouraged, all through the Bible. Remind yourself how amazing it is that God wants you to know him.
Read the Passage
After choosing a passage, read it several times. You might want to read it slowly, pausing after each sentence. If possible, read it out loud. Originally the Bible was heard, not read.
Keep a Journal
Respond to God's Word by writing down ho you're challenged, truths you want to remember, thanksgiving an praise, sins to confess, commands to obey, or any other thoughts you have.
Dig Deep
When you read the Bible, look deeper than the pain meaning of the words. Here area few ideas about what you might find.
  • Truth about God's character: What do the verses reveal about God's character?

  • Truth about your life and our world: You don't have to figure out life on your own. Life can be difficult, but when you know how the world works you can make good decisions guided by wisdom from God.

  • Truth about the world's past: The Bible reveals God's intervention in our mistakes and triumphs throughout history. The choices we read about - good and bad - serve as examples to challenge us to greater faith and obedience. (See Hebrews 11:1-12:1.)

  • Truth about our actions: God will never leave you stranded. Although he allows us to go through hard times, he is always with us. Our actions have consequences and rewards. Just like he does in Bible stories, God can use all of the consequences and rewards caused by our actions to help others.

As you read, ask these four questions to help you learn from the Bible:

  • What do these verses teach me about who God is, how he acts, and how people respond?
  • What does this passage teach about the nature of the world?
  • What wisdom can I learn from what I read?
  • How should I change my life because of what I learned from these verses?

Ask Questions

You may be tempted to skip over parts you don't skip over parts you don't understand, but don't give up too easily. Understanding the Bible cant be hard work. If you come across a word you don't know, look it up in a regular dictionary or Bible dictionary. If you come across a verse that seems to contradict another verse, see whether your Bible has nay notes to explain it. Write down your questions and ask someone who has more knowledge about the Bible that you.

Apply the Truth to Your Life:

The bible should make a difference in your life. It contains the help you need to live the life god intended . Knowledge of the Bible without personal obedience is worthless an dcouses hypocrisy and pride. Take time to consider the condition of you thinking, attitudes, and actions, and wonder about how God is working in you. Think about your life situation and how you can serve others better.

More Helpful Ideas:

  1. Take the position that the times you have set aside for Bible reading and study are nonnegotiable. Don't let other activities squeeze Bible study time out of your schedule.
  2. Avoid the extremes of being ritualistic (reading a chapter just to mark it off a list) and lazy (giving up).
  3. Begin with realistic goals and boundaries for your study time. Five to seven minutes a day may be a challenge for you to at the beginning.
  4. Be open to the leading and teaching of God's Spirit.
  5. Love God like he's your parent (or the parent you wish you had).

Additional Info for Adam's "Jewlery" Question

Adam if you would like to check out the actual text that I was applying to your question on Sunday it is in 1Corinthians 8, the principal is in verses 9-13. I have relied on this passage many times over the years! I would suggest looking it up in your study Bible, it may also explain the historical context of the passage.
